Bitter herbs are mentioned in Numbers 9:11. Chicory is native to Syria. It is eaten, even today, in salads, ground for use as a beverage, or treated as a cooked vegetable. Botanists believe this is one of the bitter herbs since it still grows wild in Egypt. Others use this plant as a substitute for coffee.

Cultivation

Chicory needs deep, rich loamy soil. The preferred soil pH is 6.4. If carrots grow well for you, then chicory should grow well. It needs a minimum temperature of -40 ° Fahrenheit.
