Mint -- Mentha longifolia and Mentha piperita

Mint is another of the tithing herbs given to the Temple's religious leaders. It is called a tithing herb because growers were expected to give 10 percent of it to religious leaders in the Temple. Matthew. 23:23 and Luke 11:42 also talk about mint. Note: Spearmint, Mentha spicata, originated in Europe and is not a Bible plant.

Cultivation

You may want to grow mint in a container or it will quickly spread throughout the garden. This plant is very winter hardy to -40°F and possibly lower. Needs a semi-shady spot with moist soil.

Bible References

Matthew 23:23: Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Luke 11:42: But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
